Trolling for Dolphin near Orlando Florida
It's Almost A Sure Thing For Mahi Mahi Or Dorado Fishing During Early Spring In Orlando Florida If The Ocean Cooperates
Wednesday February 21, 2018
Words cannot describe the colors and beauty of a fired up mahi mahi chasing the teasers and bait spread in the cobalt blue waters off Port Canaveral, Florida just east of Orlando. Almost immediately upon boating the dorado loses it's fantastic colors and changes too a paler version of it's spectacular rainbow colors as it's thrown to the cooler headed for the dinner table as one of the world's most renowned fish species and it's flavory flesh.
Orlando Florida has great dolphin fishing in the spring time, specifically in April and May and becomes much less consistant during the rest of the year until November when a smaller run follows the fall and ends the warmer weather fishing and calmer water of the summer. Canaveral's dolphin run usually marks the end of the annual run of cobia but there is always a few stragglers around to keep you busy when your pursuing king mackerel or other offshore species.
The dolphin fish (not to be confused with the mammal) has several names that have developed over the years into a more commonly used names for ease on unknowledgeable anglers. The Hawaiian name Mahi Mahi is the most dependable name in restaurants and in other parts of the country the spanish name for the dolphin fish is dorado. A dolphin by any other name is still a dolphin to the old timers in Florida and often gets a few eyebrows raised as the unknowing are caught by surprised when an anglers declares they've caught and killed a dolphin for the dinner table.
Enough about the names of dolphin already! Just east of Orlando a few minutes is some of the best dolphin fishing in the USA when the run is on during April and May. These fish are hard fighting, high jumping and great tasting fare for the table and for those willing to take a chance and head out to the deep blue sea in pursue of the ocean's bounty off Port Canaveral during the spring, you'll have a blast bringing in some of these brutes for a day of fishing fun.
To fisnd out more about dorado fishing in the Orlando, Florida area and it's inshore and offshore angling opportunities in Central Florida? Call (321) 868-4953 and Ask for Captain Gina. They'll be more than glad to talk to you in length about setting up a mahi mahi trip trolling for dolphin while you're visiting the Orlando area.
Orlando's Best Bet for Dorado and Trolling Offshore
Dolphin fishing off Port Canaveral is "as good as it gets" in April and early May east of Orlando in the Atlantic Ocean. "We grow em big during the month of April off Port Canaveral" explains Port Canaveral's longtime charter fishing Captain Brent Hancock. And big they are... during one afternoon one of our charter captain friends boated two over 60 pounds and we managed to land a few in the thirty pound range.
I'm no longer taking large parties offshore fishing, but manage to take one to three anglers out a few times each spring for mahi-mahi fishing off Port Canaveral. When the seas are larger than 2-3 feet, and the weather still permits we'll set you up with larger boat and an experienced charter captain for a smoother ride and a little more cost, but if it's dolphin you're looking to catch... you'll often need a bigger boat as the gulf stream off Orlando is often 30 miles offshore.
For the anglers wanting a smaller more intimate trip, I have a 24 foot boat equipped with everything needed for a successful day of fishing in the deepest blue seas off Florida's east coast if the ocean is calm.
When visiting Orlando next time... Look us up for an offshore fishing trip trolling for dolphin and I'll promise you a great time in the Florida sunshine (if it's not too cloudy ;-). We provide the best professional Orlando fishing guide service for you and or your family while visiting Orlando and trolling and sight fishing for dorado.
Captain Richard Bradley
During the winter months from December to February the ocean can be very upset and difficult for anglers to get out without a large, capable vessel. While dorado often run during the early parts of December they taper off shortly afterward and bottom fishing for grouper and snapper become more prevelant for serious anglers wanting to catch ocean fish. Look for late March thru May to be better months with larger fish showing up in the earlier part of the run and as the summer nears things will taper off again for mahi-mahi. Bottom line: It's probably better for anglers to wait till after the winter to pursue trolling for dolphin as the bite will probably be slow. Look to the inshore lagoons for redfish and sea trout for fun fishing or hire a large boat for bottom fishing for more benthic fish like grouper and snapper.

February - 2018 Fishing Report
Every February seems to be different and this one is no different.
February - 2018 Fishing Forecast
There's not a better way to spend a Valentines day with your sweetie than out in the boat catching the winter sun and a few nice fish. If the weather this February stays nice, look for some fun and rewarding fishing into the central Florida spring break period. Fish get hungry as spring approaches and the cold winter grip releases. I KNOW... I KNOW... IT's Florida! How can Florida get cold? Well, it can often drop into the 40° mark over night and be in the 70's during the day, so plan a late morning trip on the lagoon and you should be safe in Februay and into March.

My wife and I have been on several trips with Captain Richard and have always had a great time and have usually caught a lot of fish, and would have had a wonderful day on the water even if we would not have been so lucky. I would recommend Lagooner to anyone wanting a fun day out fishing.
